Many Faiths, One Nation: our vision for Malaysia

INTERLOK – IS 1MALAYSIA A MYTH?

22.02.2011

The Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) appeal to the Prime Minister to withdraw the book “Interlok” from being used as a text for the Form 5, Malay Literature Component. This would be in line with your vision embodied in 1Malaysia.

The tenets of 1Malaysia advanced is a systematic evolution in the thinking of all Malaysians from mere tolerance to acceptance and finally to celebration of the achievements of every citizen of Malaysia irrespective of race, colour or religion.

Mr Prime Minister Sir, we are of the firm opinion that Education is the best tool that can be mobilised to help generate the evolution of thought needed to achieve the aspirations and objectives of 1Malaysia. Instead, we are saddened that Education is being compromised to advance a very insidious attempt to ridicule, insult and belittle the non Muslim citizens of this country.

Further, Mr Prime Minister Sir, your official 1Malaysia website states the following:-

“1Malaysia is intended to provide a free and open forum to discuss the things that matter deeply to us as a Nation. It provides a chance to express and explore the many perspectives of our fellow citizens.

What makes Malaysia unique is the diversity of our peoples. 1Malaysia’s goal is to preserve and enhance this unity in diversity which has always been our strength and remains our best hope for the future. I hope this website will initiate an open and vital dialogue exploring our Malaysian identity, our purpose, and direction. I encourage each of you to join me in defining our Malaysia and the role we must play in its future. Each of us – despite our differences – shares a desire for a better tomorrow. Each of us wants opportunity, respect, friendship, and understanding.”

Mr Prime Minister Sir, all the non Muslim Community of Malaysia is asking for is that you accord us the opportunity, friendship, understanding and most of all respect for being loyal and hardworking citizens of this country.

MCCBCHST once again appeal to you Prime Minister Sir, to withdraw the novel “Interlok” and replace it with another novel that is free of derogatory words and suggestions.

Rev Dr Thomas Philips
President
MCCBCHST
